Library Coffee Co- Closing 5/31

Sad, sad news to report today... our beloved local coffee shop Library Coffee Co is closing its doors after over 3 years in business. We had heard rumors a week or so ago that the owner has sold/leased the space for a new sushi restaurant. As much as I love sushi... local coffee shops are so much better. We are very sad to see this place go- we have many good memories of happy hours, wine tastings, live music, and sunday coffee walks with the pup. I doubt a sushi restaurant will have half as much atmosphere (or $3 draft beers!). We will keep you posted on any updates, and see below for the email from the owner.

Yes, the rumors are true! After an awesome 3 and a half year run we are closing our doors on May 31st. While it is truly sad to close our doors, I have an amazing offer and life opportunity that I simply cannot pass up. Brookhaven has been part of my life for 11 years and our goal when we opened up was to try and give Brookhaven it's own independent meeting space/café. While that was a resounding success, it has truly been an honor to serve the community.

Secondly, AND MUCH MORE IMPORTANT, I have 12 employees who are losing there jobs, half of which I have worked with for over 3 years. I do feel an obligation to do my best to transition them to new opportunities and I would greatly appreciate any of your efforts to that end. If you have or know of jobs available please get in touch with me so I can help any or all of them transition to a new job.

Owning and operating Library Coffee Company has fulfilled one of my many dreams and I thank each and every one of you who has been part of the experience.

Library 2012 Wine Tasting Dates

Cory and I have enjoyed attending a few of the monthly Library Wine Tasting events last year. While we were hanging out at Library Coffee Co last week, we noticed the 2012 wine dates and themes posted and thought I would share so you can get them on your calendars!

• Wednesday, February 8th: Old World Classics, Feauturing wines of Tuscany, Rioja, Champagne, Mosel, and other benchmark winegrowing regions of the world
• Wednesday, March 14: Pinot Night: Noir, Blanc, Gris, & Bubbles (who knew there were so many?)
• Wednesday, April 11: North Coast California, Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Classics
• Wednesday, May 9: Iberian Peninsula, Featuring Spain and Portugal

Pour Wine Bar

We had meant to have a nice dinner at Kaleidoscope last week, and even got there early to ensure a table for six, but they had a last minute closing. They had lacquered the floors that day which weren't quite dry; plus the place wasn't airing out (smelled like a strong Sharpie... really it did- they let us in for about a minute and it was just too much to bear). So we hung our heads, after weeks of planning a trip to the newest, hottest restaurant in Brookhaven, and walked over to Verde for some tacos (not quite the same after you're craving duck fat french fries!)

Stacy & Chris and Maddy & Kyle joined us at Verde where we all enjoyed some $3 Tecates, $2 PBRs, and slightly overpriced gourmet tacos (word to the wise- if you get there early, you'll have to deal with a lot of families with little kiddies!). Stacy already did a great job posting about dinner, and with her newfound photo skills, check out her great blog post about Verde.

Since we had all had a long week of work, we decided to continue the evening at Pour Wine Bar & Market. The mood was very relaxed and chill inside- they have a unique interior with a gastro-pub feel.  Half of the space is the Wine Market (see photo above) and the other half is the Wine Bar. There was only one other small group in the bar- which was a welcome change to the slight chaos of Verde.

Pour has wine by the glass ($7-$13 a glass) and also serves tastings as well (called "Flights").  They have a 3 glass tasting (pick any wine off the menu) for $12 and a 6 glass tasting for $20. Most of us ordered the tastings, and with that (with 2 orders of the 6 glass tasting) you also receive a cheese and cracker platter. Check out all the glasses on our table (above)!

We definitely had a lot of fun tasting all the different wines- although it did take them awhile to pour them all. Even if you're not a big wine drinker- they also have some local and small brews available by the bottle. It was great trying it out with friends, and I would recommend this spot for after dinner drinks with a date (or before dinner while you're waiting for your table at Verde or Kaleidoscope), or with a small group of friends to just relax.

Also- please note that due to weather, last week's Blind Tasting has been moved to tomorrow (Tuesday, January 18).

• Wednesday, February 9 (Cabernet Cage Match)
• Wednesday, March 9 (Northwest Tasting: Washington, Idaho, Oregon)
• Wednesday, April 13 (Argentina vs. Australia) 
• Wednesday, May 11 (Pinot Noir Cage Match)
• Wednesday, June 15 (Summer Sippers: light crisp whites, dry roses, refreshing reds)
• Wednesday, July 13 (Red, White, & Blue Wines)
• Wednesday, August 10 (Wines with Age)
• Wednesday, September 14 (Tailgating Favorites)

The Tastings are typically the second Wednesday of every month from 7:00pm - 9:00pm (ish) and are $20 a person. You'll get anywhere from 6 to 7 tastings of some great wine, and also 3 appetizers throughout the event.  My only advice is to get there early- tables fill up fast, and if you have a group of 4+ you probably all want to sit at the same table!
