A New (Better?) Brookhaven Farmers Market

After our somewhat disappointing experience with the Brookhaven Farmers Market a few weeks ago, we are cautiously optimistic about the the NEW Brookhaven Farmers Market. Hosted by the organizers of the Chamblee Farmer Market (in fact, this is the Chamblee one, just a new locale), this one has a better time- Every Saturday from 9:00am - 1:00pm and a better location: 1441 Dresden Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319 (Behind Haven

This Saturday, July 16th, will be the debut of this Brookhaven (formerly Chamblee) Farmers Market. Their website mentions (at least) 18 farmers, food producers and local artisans at the market:

Possible Cityhood?

There has been a lot of buzz lately about the possible annexation of North DeKalb County. See below for information that came from a local neighborhood email blast:

Representatives Mike Jacobs (District 80 - Brookhaven, pictured) and Tom Taylor (District 79 - Dunwoody) have introduced a bill (House Bill 428) in the Georgia House of Representatives that would allow "peninsulas of unincorporated areas surrounded by cities" (i.e. north Brookhaven between Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Chamblee city limits) to be annexed into the adjacent municipality after certain procedures are met.

The unexpected introduction of this bill has initiated a firestorm of discussions among our Dekalb neighbors to the west and north. As a result of the community interest in this legislature, Representative Jacobs has scheduled "a community-wide meeting on cityhood and annexation to be held on Tuesday, March 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Chamblee United Methodist Church, 4147 Chamblee Dunwoody Road" per his latest email blast.

If you have any interest/opinion in this matter, it would be a great idea to attend the public meeting noted above to let your voice be heard.

Chick-fil-A Chamblee, Now Open!

The Chick-fil-A in Chamblee, off of Peachtree/Chamblee Dunwoody is now open! The restaurant underwent some massive interior/exterior renovations for about 6-8 weeks. The restaurant looks great, and I'll be sure to snap a photo next time I'm there to try the new Spicy Chicken Biscuit!

Rose of India

We pass by the Rose of India every day going to/coming home from work.  It's the small retro-looking restaurant in between Galla's Pizza and Greenwood's Creamery on Peachtree Rd... keep your eyes peeled, it's easily missed.  While there may not be any cars in the parking lot, don't be deterred... there's good Indian in there!

We decided to try it out last week, and when we walked in- we were the only ones in the whole restaurant.  We were greeted by a welcoming staff and sat in a clean dining room, although it was empty. In their defense, it was a cold Tuesday night, but while we sat by ourselves, they seemed to turn out endless to-go orders.  Either way, service was prompt and friendly (as it should be, us being the only ones to serve) and we quickly chose what we wanted to eat.

Having both had Indian cuisine before, we both wanted to try an array of dishes to see how they plated our favorites.  First, we were served Papadums (above), which is a typical Indian spiced flat bread as an appetizer.

We both decided to get the meat combo plate, which was sort of a sampler plate.  It came with Naan (although we had to get an extra order of Naan to satisfy our craving), rice and three dishes.  The three dishes were (clockwise from bottom) Lamb Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, and a Veggie Poneer.  All three satisfied our Indian craving, and we would definitely recommend this route for first time Indian go-ers.  It's a nice representation of some staple Indian dishes (although it's missing a good Tandoori) and Rose of India did them justice.  The combo plate also came with a rice pudding for desert that reminded me of my Grandma's tapioca pudding.  Interesting flavor and texture - I'd only order it a la carte if you're feeling adventurous.  While we enjoyed the food, we can't deny the atmosphere and cuisine of Panahar (even though Panahar is not Indian per se, it's Bangladeshi...).

We will definitely find ourselves back at Rose of India, most likely on Monday nights... when Panahar is closed.

Chick-fil-a, Closed for Renovations

The Chick-fil-a we frequent (on Peachtree in Chamblee) is closed for some much needed renovations. Depending on the extent of the renovation (Interior and/or Exterior) the renovations could take anywhere from 4 - 12 weeks. When I drove by this morning on my way out of the UPS Store in the same shopping center, it looked pretty serious. Let's hope it doesn't take them too long with this bad weather and the holidays! For now, we'll have to go to the Chick-fil-a on North Druid Hills and Briarcliff for our fried chicken fix... If only the new Zaxby's Chamblee development was progressing faster!

We will keep you posted on its progress, and when they will be back open for business.

My Favorite Place

Yes, that is the name of it. My Favorite Place is a local antique/rummage market located off of Peachtree in Chamblee (sorry no website). At first glace, this would definitely not attract a typical antique-r. They have so much stuff (for lack of a better word) in this place that it spills into the aisles. Every nook and cranny of this place has some sort of knick-knack piled on top of another one.

For some reason however, to me, this place is relaxing. There is something about the smell of worn leather, furniture polish, and old books that just soothes me. And maybe its just that the piles of vintage hats and mis-matched china make me appreciate the only slight clutter and chaos in my life. Plus, this place makes my house look and feel clean, tidy, and organized.

I try to stop by on my way home from work on Fridays. It's open from 10:30am-5:30pm everyday (even Sunday). I usually just take a look around, but word to the wise, try to go into that space with a purpose. You can get lost inside of the 10,000 sq.ft. large warehouse-space with the small aisles and cluttered dead-ends. I try to have a few things in mind that I'm looking for and just stick with it. For the most part, their prices are incredible reasonable (especially for antiques). Cory and I bought our great coffee table there for $50. We've also purchased an antique oak office chair ($20), Hat/Coat Rack ($11), Clock ($4), and various other things that I'm sure we probably don't need :).

The only thing that rivals this place is the once-a-month Scott Antique Market. A large, multi-vendor market near the airport. The only problem with the Scott Antique Market is that its a day affair... with two seperate convention center type spaces, $10 parking, and hundreds of vendors it can be a little overwhelming.

My Favorite Place is just large enough to have a little bit of everything, and it's definitely small enough to navigate. I enjoy rooting through the bins and shelves and just wondering where these pieces came from. It's a cool place to check out if you enjoy antiquing. The people there are always friendly (and they will negotiate with you too!). Just remember to wash your hands when you get home!
